Limelight Sports, a sports event management company, approached us for a quote to cover a large interpreting project which would be a key element in an event called "The Chance".

The event was being produced on behalf of Nike and served as an opportunity for young football players from across the globe to earn a place in the 2011/12 Nike Academy. This is a training program geared towards aiding talented, young players secure contracts with professional football clubs.

At Pearl, we always seek to gain a clear understanding of our clients’ requirements. For this event, to be able to present the best possible work flow options to the client, we visited Limelight’s offices and had an in-depth meeting.

From the get go, it was clear that the project would be complex and large in scale. The client’s vision included having interpreters to cover 26 different languages and interpret presentations by professional football players and organisers of the event over a four day period. Additionally, the interpreting requirement would not be limited to one single venue but would include a visit to Wembley Stadium.

Due to the complex nature of this project and in order to ensure complete customer support, we decided that the responsibility for the coordination of the project would be handled by a dedicated project management team. The team offered advice and assistance in the preparation phase and during the project itself.

Project Managers were present at the venue during official parts of the event making sure that the simultaneous interpreting equipment (i.e. interpretation booths, wireless receivers, headphones and wireless tour guide system) had been set up properly and was fit for purpose. This included such details as making sure all the participants had the receivers set to the correct channel and, most importantly, that the simultaneous interpreters were fully briefed and ready to go live.

Coordination of the project proved to be exceptionally demanding due to the fact that the simultaneous interpretation booths had to be set up in different parts of the venue and interpreters could only follow the events via video link.
