Wave Creative Communications, a company specialising in strategic marketing campaigns, contacted Pearl Linguistics for a quote for a project that had been commissioned by the NHS. We were asked to prepare an estimate of costs for the translation, proofreading, voice-over and subtitling of the content of an informational DVD, designed for patients living with lung cancer and their carers.

The original request was for six languages (French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Welsh). However, as the project progressed, more text was added and we were asked to provide translations in a further six languages (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Hindi and Urdu).

In order to meet all the requirements of the project we set up a group of mother-tongue, professional linguists, including voice-over artists, who specialise in medical and promotional material. These native speakers play an active part in the life of their communities and so have a natural grasp of the subtleties that this work requires.

In accordance with Wave’s instructions, the final translation was sent for approval and gained extremely positive feedback. Despite the tight deadline of each stage, the completed scripts, accompanied by the fully edited voice-over recordings were delivered before the actual deadline.

The subtitling company appointed by Wave to finalise the DVDs did not have any experience in handling complex script text. As a consequence, the text produced in complex script languages (i.e. Indian languages) was corrupted and therefore impossible to use. Wave contacted us for help and we agreed to provide linguistic support to the subtitling company. This entailed a dedicated Project Manager and all relevant linguists being available 24/7 to check individual screenshots and provide instant feedback. In addition, we contacted all our resources specialising it the Indian languages, who provided us with numerous fonts used for subtitling in complex script languages. Once we had full confirmation that all subtitles were fully functional, the project was finalised and sent for production.
